Archives of Ukraine


The network of state archival institutions of Ukraine includes 2284 institutions. Among them are 9 Central State Archives of Ukraine, 4 research and other central state archival institutions, 24 Regional State Archives and State Archives of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, 2 State Archives of the Cities of Kyiv and Sevastopol, 2 city archives, 468 archival divisions (sectors) of district state administrations, 134 archival divisions (sectors) of city councils, 12 branch archives and 1628 labor archives under the authority of city, district, village and settlement councils. From total number of labor archives 314 are body corporate. The information about archival institutions of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, 3 archival divisions of district state administrations, 12 archival divisions of city councils, 48 labor archives of Donetsk region and 5 archival divisions of district state administrations, 11 archival divisions of city councils, and 58 labor archives of Luhansk region are unknown, as these archival institutions are in the territory in which public authorities temporarily do not carry out or carry out not in full the powers.


The total amount of employees of the archival sphere is 4057 people.


The State Archival Service of Ukraine consists of 2 directorates, 1 department, 3 divisions and 3 sectors with 118 persons of staff employed.


The National Archival Fund contains more than 58 million items (more than 5 milliard documents, 50 milliard sheets).


December, 24 is the professional holiday of the Ukrainian archivists, i. e. the Day of Archival Institutions Servants (established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine by October 30, 1998).


The professional holiday is also celebrated in Georgia (the first Sunday of March), Germany (March 7), the Russian Federation (March 10), Macedonia (April 1), Kyrgyzstan (August 30), Belarus (October 6), the Netherlands (October 17), Iceland (November 14), Slovenia (December 3), Azerbaijan (December 6). Annually the second Saturday of November the professional holiday is celebrated by archivists of Sweden. The association of the Swiss archivists celebrates the National day of the archivist every five years (1997, 2003, 2007). The International Archives Day is celebrating every June 9 according to the decision of the General Assembly of the International Council on Archives starting from November, 2007 (Quebec, Canada).


The official publication of the State Archival Service of Ukraine is “The Herald of the State Archival Service of Ukraine” (since 2000).


The magazine “Archives of Ukraine” has been publishing since 1947, since 2000 its online version is free for users at the Internet.


Ukraine is the only country of the former CIS where no special archival building has been erected since 1991.


Kyiv is the only European capital which city archives is situated at the basement and ground floor of a residential (!) house.


Last year, the total amount of financing from the State Budget of Ukraine of Ukrderzharhiv and institutions belonging to the sphere of its management, the state archives of the regions and the city of Kyiv amounted 174 829,2 UAH.

As of January 1, 2019, 54 375 058 item archival units of administrative documentation, 965 852 item archival units of personal papers, 1 131 585 item archival units of scientific and technical documentation, 81 795 item archival units of moving image, 45 223 item archival units of phonotapes, 19 551 item archival units of videotapes, 1 329 883 item archival units of photographic records, which totals 56 599 513 item archival units and 1 349 434 stocktaking item of archival records of the National Archival Holdings are kept in state archives, archival departments of state scientific institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, archival divisions of district state administrations and city councils.


For reference: as of January 1, 2014, 1 397 799 item archival units of administrative documentation, 14 115 item archival units of personal papers, 18 178 item archival units of scientific and technical documentation, 588

item archival units of moving image, 37 882 item archival units of photographic records, 329 item archival units of phonotapes, 21 item archival units of videotapes were kept in the State Archives of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.


As of January 1, 2014, 203 875 item archival units of administrative documentation, 4 696 item archival units of personal papers, 10 582 item archival units of scientific and technical documentation, 3 item archival units of moving image, 17 603 item archival units of photographic records, 131 item archival units of phonotapes, 345 item archival units of videotapes were kept in the State Archives of the City of Sevastopol.


As of January 1, 2014, 1 920 974 item archival units of administrative documentation, 4 733 item archival units of personal papers, 20 750 item archival units of scientific and technical documentation, 107 item archival units of moving image, 16 417 item archival units of photographic records, 937 item archival units of phonotapes, 118 item archival units of videotapes were kept in the State Archives of the Donetsk Region, which is located in a non-controlled territory of Ukraine.


As of January 1, 1 489 173 item archival units of administrative documentation, 1 053 item archival units of personal papers, 9 266 item archival units of scientific and technical documentation, 472 item archival units of moving image, 19 405 item archival units of photographic records, 261 item archival units of phonotapes, 2 item archival units of videotapes were kept in the State Archives of Luhansk Region, which is located in a non-controlled territory of Ukraine.


About 21 million item archival units and 1.5 million stocktaking item of archival records of the National Archival Holdings are kept in the archival departments of institutions, manuscript departments of museums and libraries. Thus, the total number is 80 million item archival units and stocktaking item of archival records of the National Archival Holdings.


The most ancient document preserved at the Ukrainian state archives is the debt letter from the old-Russ city of Zvenygorod (the first third of the XIII century; Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv) written on beresta.


The most ancient document preserved at the Kyiv state archives is the Greek Gospel on parchment (the XIII century; Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kyiv).



The most ancient document of the National Archival Holdings dates back to the III millennium B. C. (clay boards; the Institute of Manuscripts of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine).

The most ancient document of the National Archival Holdings of the Slavonic origin is the Kyiv glagolic papers (the end of IX – the beginning of X century; the Institute of Manuscripts of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine).

Among the state archives of Ukraine the State Archives of Lviv Region preserves the biggest amount of items (2 445 316 item archival units and 42 194 item archival units of photographic records).


Use of archival documents


State archives of Ukraine fulfill more than 421 thousand requests per they prepare more than 1800 exhibitions of photo and archival documents devoted to the historical past of the Ukrainian people.


More than 29 thousand researchers visit state archives reading rooms per year.


In 2018, more than 188 thousand virtual users from Ukraine and from even more than 140 countries of the world visited the official web-portal of the State Archival Service of Ukraine “Archives of Ukraine”.


The total capacity of the official web-portal of the State Archival Service of Ukraine “Archives of Ukraine” is about 17 Gbs.


International activities


Since 1956, the State Archival Service of Ukraine is a member of the International Council on Archives (ICA). Today, ICA unites over 1500 members from 195 of world countries.


The State Archival Service of Ukraine is active in international activities, participates in international professional forums, has international bilateral agreements with archival services and national archives of world countries – 34 (Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Belarus, Bulgaria, Armenia, Greece, Georgia, Estonia, Iran, Israel, Cyprus, China, Cuba, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, Hungary, Uzbekistan, Czech Republic, Montenegro). The State Archival Service of Ukraine signed also three Protocols on joint projects with the state archival services of Belarus, Hungary, Russia, three Memorandums on cooperation with the State Archival Service of Georgia, the National Library and Archives of Iran and the Bavarian State Archives.


The Ukrainian nomination “Documentary heritage deal with the consequences of Chernobyl Disaster” is included in the international register of the program of UNESCO “Memory of the world” on October 30, 2017.
